Africa: A New Chapter in Partnership

A Paradigm Shift in German-African Relations

A Strategy for Sustainable Growth, Social Justice, and Climate Action

The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has unveiled its new Africa Strategy, signaling a transformative approach in Germany's partnership with African nations. The strategy aligns with the Federal Government's Africa Policy Guidelines and prioritizes social and economic development, climate action, and sustainable food systems.

A Focus on African Priorities

The BMZ emphasizes cooperation with African partners to address their specific needs and aspirations. Areas such as renewable energy, local food processing, and intra-African trade will receive increased support. The strategy aims to foster a vibrant and resilient African economy, while also addressing the challenges of climate change and social injustice.

Shaping the Future Together

Development Minister Svenja Schulze emphasized the importance of a joint future with Africa. "Our goal is to create a partnership of equals, where we work hand in hand to build a more sustainable, prosperous, and just world," she stated. The strategy seeks to empower African nations to determine their own development paths and contribute to global decision-making.

A Turn from Private Sector Focus

The BMZ's new strategy departs from its previous focus on private sector-driven development. It recognizes that addressing poverty, inequality, and climate change requires a comprehensive approach that includes strong social protection systems and support for small-scale farmers and businesses.

Africa's Changing Landscape

The strategy acknowledges the rapid transformation underway in Africa, including its growing population, urbanization, and economic diversification. The BMZ aims to support African nations in harnessing these opportunities while mitigating potential risks. The ministry emphasizes the importance of addressing the root causes of migration and creating inclusive societies that offer opportunities for all.
